Using NLP to deal with feelings of fear

NLP (Neuro-linguistic Programming) has been growing in popularity over recent years and is becoming recognised as one of the best ways to understand what makes us tick.  The specific strategies and techniques used enable us to understand our thinking processes and become aware of how they affect our feelings.

One of the biggest obstacles in people’s lives is fear – be it a full-blown phobia or a general feeling of anxiety. Ironically, most of the things that we worry about never happen so we hold ourselves back for nothing.

The mind and body are very closely connected – so if you’re feeling a sense of fear inside your body it’s being triggered by your thoughts, which are made up of pictures and internal dialogue.  The quickest way to change your feelings is to change these images:

  • Think about something that worries you and become aware of the pictures and sounds that accompany that thought.
  • Imagine holding a remote control in your hand and turn the colour down on those pictures making them less bright.
  • And if there’s any internal dialogue that goes with that picture, turn the volume right down.
  • Continue adjusting the picture – drain all the colour out of it and start shrinking it right down till it’s nothing more than a dot…. and send it far away.
  • Finish off by putting in a good picture instead – allow yourself to see things going just the way you’d like them to.
  • Now notice how this changes your feelings.

It may take a bit of practice, but learning how to do this will enable you to easily get rid of your feelings of fear whenever you need to.
